Steven Craig Johnson

Steven Craig Johnson, son of the late Charles West Johnson and Annie Mae Johnson, was born on September 25th, 1959, in Baltimore, Maryland. God saw fit to call him home and he departed this life on December 9th, 2025. As a child, Steven was quite mischievous but as he grew older that later transformed into an investigative thirst for knowledge. Steven received his education through the Baltimore City Public School System. He attended Belmont Elementary, Calverton Junior High, and was a very proud graduate of Polytechnic Institute Class of 1977. While at Poly, he thoroughly enjoyed being a part of their football team. He was always ready, running full speed to attack the opponent. Steven pursued higher education in Ohio graduating from Columbus Technical Institute in 1982. Steven loved his parents, and they made sure he went to church and heard the Word of God. He was a member of the Whitestone Baptist Church and at an early age, gave his life to Christ and was baptized by the late Rev. Dr. William Howard Thompson on March 4th, 1973. Steven was intrigued by all things technical. He could spend hours figuring out a problem with a computer determined to resolve the issue. He actually received much gratification once the mission was accomplished. He would say, “okay where’s my next patient”, referring to a broken computer. He was his family’s go-to person for all things tech-related. He also had several hobbies, fishing, like his father did with him, gave him great joy. He was a lot like his father in that he found himself fascinated with cars. His favorite sport was football. He started out a Redskins (Commanders) fan, then later became a Ravens fan. He was fond of many sports such as basketball, track and field, golfing, and tennis. Steven loved to travel. His favorite vacation destination was Virginia Beach. Steven was generally a happy, easy-going person. He was always willing to help whenever he could. He had a loud laugh you could not ignore and a smile that was contagious. Steven’s career spanned several employers, but he spent the past 34 years as an IT Specialist under Leidos at The National Institutes of Health (NIH). It was there that he found his second home. There it didn’t seem like work for him, it was more like going home. There was a genuine camaraderie amongst the team. Steve would coordinate races with the group encouraging participation. The enjoyment of these events overshadowed any exhaustion he may have felt. Steve was awarded the NIH/CSR Director’s Award in 2020 and 2022, earning kudos within his company nearly every month. The true highlight of his life was the birth of his only son, Steven Craig Johnson II. Steven C. Johnson took immense pride in fatherhood, cherishing their time together above all else. Father’s Day fishing trips—where companionship outweighed any catch—weekends at car auctions hunting treasures to restore, and family gatherings sealed with group photos were the essence of their unbreakable bond. He imparted enduring lessons: the virtues of hard work, integrity, self-reliance, and selfless service to others. He taught his son to value perseverance, to repair what was broken, and to find fulfillment in the journey itself. To his family and community, Steven was a man of unwavering principle; to his son, he was incomparably more—not merely a devoted father, but his truest and best friend. Loved ones left to carry on Steven’s memory are his son, Steven Craig Johnson II; the mother of Steven II, Andrea Gail Alston; one brother, Charles Keith Johnson; two sisters, Jacqueline Jones (Herman) and Portia Henry (Samuel); aunts, Willietta Anderson (Rev. Leon Anderson), Wilma Johnson, Joyce Johnson, and Marjorie Jefferson; uncles, Douglas Johnson (Alice) and Prescott Newton; nieces, Keisha, Shontelle, Tamara, Jetavia (Brandon), Shekinah, and Talia; nephews, Charlie, Jason (Michelle), Samuel Jr (Uduak); former sister-in-law (Leslie Johnson), and a host of great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, co-workers, and friends.
