Murdice King

MURDICE KING, daughter of the late Ernest Marable and Eliza Muse Marable, was born in Chambers County, Lafayette, Alabama on December 25, 1921. Blessed to see 102 years on this Earth, she departed this life on October 10, 2024. Murdice loved the Lord, and attended Unity Bibleway Church under the pastorate of Edward R. Bunch. Murdice was a member of the Unity Bibleway Senior Choir and made sure that her children and grandchildren sat under the word of the Lord as well. From two unions, Murdice’s five children were born, Barbara Bell, Ella Fay Brown who both preceded her in death, John Henry Marable, Jeannette King McLeon, and Walter Leon King. Murdice was an avid Spades player, beating everyone who challenged her. “It was a shutout, shutout.” She also loved playing Pokeno and her numbers. She had a system in place when doing so and won the lottery quite frequently. Murdice loved watching her Westerns. Gunsmoke was her favorite. She also loved baking cupcakes for her friends and her family. In her 40 years at the Harvey Johnson Towers, she was the Queen of Mosher Street! Murdice was well loved by many who lived there and made many lasting friendships. As a young black woman growing up in the South in the 1920’s and 1930’s, Murdice faced many obstacles and hardships, particularly after the death of her mother when she was 12 years old. After leaving Alabama, she headed North and finally settled in Baltimore, Maryland where she carved out a new life for herself and her children. Murdice leaves to cherish her memory her two sons, John Henry Marable (Vanessa) and Walter Leon King (Alvenia/Tanya); her daughter, Jeannette King McLeon; her two daughters, Barbara Bell and Ella Fay Brown, both preceded her in death; nine grandchildren, Joyce Gardner-Cruz, Sharon Brown-Adams, Kevin Bell, Clifford Brown, Tonia Cofield, Tracey Bell, Michelle Brown, Javon Marable, and Walter King, Jr. She was blessed with eight great-grandchildren and fourteen great-great grandchildren. We, the family of Murdice King, celebrate her life and the 102 years God blessed us to have our beloved Mother, Nana, ... “Miss King”
