Deborah Day Davis

DEBORAH DAY DAVIS was born on June 19, 1949, in Baltimore, Md. She was the beloved daughter of the late Earl Cecil Day Sr. and Dorothy Corrine Day (nee Ball). Deborah was the eldest of nine children, a role she carried with deep responsibility, care and pride throughout her life. Deborah graduated from Eastern High School in 1968, where she played the flute and sang in the choir, nurturing a love for the arts that would remain with her always. Even as a young woman, she balanced school with work to support her family. She later trained in nursing and worked evenings in a nursing home before beginning her professional journey. Deborah went on to serve as a secretary with the Baltimore City Public School System at William H. Lemmel Middle School. She later worked in a blood bank at what is now Johns Hopkins Bayview (formerly Baltimore City Hospital). In 1979, she joined the Baltimore City Police Department, which would become her professional home for more than 40 years. During her tenure, she worked in the radio repair shop and eventually in the Victims Crime Division assisting the Police Commissioner. She remained dedicated to her work until retiring in 2020 due to illness. Creative and gifted, Deborah taught herself to sew, delighting her family with handmade clothing, especially dashikis. She also enjoyed music deeply and could listen to her favorite songs, on repeat, for weeks or even months at a time. She thoroughly enjoyed singing and dancing, and throughout her life, music was a source of joy, expression, and comfort. Her favorite pleasures were simple and soulful, the arts, her family and cooking, Mom was a foodie. She loved crabs, crab cakes, shrimp, just about anything that came in a shell. She loved to cook, especially for her family, and her greatest happiness came from bringing family together. She treasured family time, taking the family roller skating Saturdays and duckpin bowling Sundays, among other activities. She loved cabarets and traveling with family and often spoke of Canada as one of her favorite destinations. Deborah attended Ames United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. She also enjoyed jazz and opera, getting the opportunity to see “Madame Butterfly” as a young woman. An experience she spoke of fondly for years. Deborah is survived by her children, Patrice Day, Michael Day, Nathaniel Talbott and daughter-in-law Yvette Day; her siblings Dorothea Wilson (nee Day), Terry Day and Dawn Day; and her grandchildren Ashley Robinson, Micha Day, Laura Malone, Isaiah Harris-Talbott and Devonne Day. She is preceded in death by her parents Earl Cecil Day Sr. and Dorothy Corrine Day (nee Ball), along with her siblings Earl Day, Anthony Day, Sharon Day, Lisa Day and Karen Day. Deborah lived a life rich in love, creativity, humor, music and family. She filled every room with energy and warmth. And nothing brought her more joy than being surrounded by her loved ones. Her legacy of strength, compassion, laughter and togetherness will live on forever in the hearts of her family. She will be deeply missed, remembered always and cherished forever.
