Catherine Porter

CATHERINE PORTER, beloved daughter of the late James Sr. and Susan Hamilton, was born on March 26, 1946, in Alvin, South Carolina. She was the youngest of nine children. Her family’s nickname for her was “Cat.” She would often reminisce about how her life was growing up in South Carolina in her younger years. She moved to Baltimore, MD at the age of seventeen. In later years she met James Porter, and they were married on February 3, 1966. From this union they had six children: Cynthia, Samuel, Coretta, Twins Michael (deceased) and Michelle, and Sonya. She loved her family and friends. She enjoyed talking to them on the phone, and spending time with them, especially her great-grandson Monroe. She affectionately called him “her Roe Roe.” She loved to cook, and everyone loved her cooking. She also enjoyed watching Lifetime movies and crime shows. She retired from Moldcraft/Berry Plastics after working there for over thirty years. She accepted Christ at an early age while attending Bethlehem Baptist Church in Alvin, South Carolina. On April 18, 1982, she became the first lady of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully for many years alongside her husband the late Pastor Emeritus James Porter. She would help organize bake sales, apron rallies, and sell dinners to raise money for the church. She also attended Baltimore School of the Bible. She was preceded in death by her husband Pastor Emeritus James Porter, son Michael Porter Sr., grandson Nathaniel Porter, parents James Sr. and Susan Hamilton, sister Dorothy Mae Owens, and brothers Clarence, James Jr., Leroy and John Hamilton. She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory: five children, Cynthia Boyd, Samuel Porter, Coretta Spriggs, Michelle Douglas and Sonya Porter; three sons-in-law, Eddie Douglas III, Warren Spriggs and Jonathan Boyd; daughter-in-law, Phylisa Porter; fifteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; two granddaughters-in-law, Piccera Ellerby and Kristian Porter; two sisters, Lila Mae Vice and Lula Jane Brailsford; brother, Jessie Hamilton; six sisters-in-law, Mazie Hamilton, Eloise White, Eva Mae Carroll, Rosa Williams, Maggie McMillan and Elizabeth Sumpter; goddaughter, Sandra Bennett; bonus daughters, Renee Goode and Devita Porter; close friends, Ida Wilson and Thomasina Lampkin; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
