Bertha M. Chase

Bertha Marie Chase, daughter of the late Irma Johnson - Alston and Douglass Green, was born on April 2,1932. On May 22, 2022, after a brief illness, she went home to be with the Lord. She married the late Raymond M. Chase, Sr., and out of this union 7 children were born. Bertha was educated in the Baltimore City School System. In Bertha’s early years, she was a private duty housekeeper. She later worked for the Baltimore City Retirement Systems. She retired from that job to raise her first granddaughter Paula. Bertha returned to work many years later as a private duty nurse after acquiring her Certified Nursing Assistant Certification. She enjoyed children. She loved to talk about her family tree, and she was known as the family historian. She would talk captivatingly for hours about her childhood and family members - and we loved to listen. Bertha lived her remarkable life by focusing on her family’s well-being and success; she spared no sacrifice for them. Bertha was a constant source of wise counsel and advice to her children, as well as to her siblings and friends, and, by her example and magnetic personality, Bertha imparted important life lessons to all who knew her. Bertha believed and taught that a person should stand by what he or she feels is right and always be accountable for his or her own actions and words. She was the eldest of nine children. Walter Johnson, Sheila Lyles and Stephanie Lyles preceded her in death, Robert Lyles Jr., Richard Lyles Sr. (Hope), Reginald Lyles, Stanley Lyles Sr., and Katrina Stanfield-Rhone (Octavie). She was affectionally known as Bert, Bertina, Sis, Ma, Mother, Grandma and Grandma Bert. She is survived by her children Garland (Sandy), Diane (André), Franscine, Victor and Steven (Stephanie), and her adopted granddaughter Paula (Rudy). She was preceded in death by her children Paula and Raymond, Jr. Bertha leaves to mourn her surviving children, sister, brothers, 16 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Although she is not physically with us, her love for us will always remain in our hearts.
