Tributes

Robert L. Gillard was born on October 29, 1945 in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents were the late David and Daisy Berry Gillard, and Robert was the second of the seven children that were from that union. The other children were Ruby, Joyce, Paula, James, David, Anita and Alvin. Robert completed his education within the Baltimore City Public School System. During his formative years he was baptized at Fountain Baptist Church by the late Rev. Dennis Barrow. He was an active member in the Sunday School for many years. In his own personal way, he continued to evidence that he did, indeed have a relationship with the Lord. In 1968, Robert was inducted into the U.S. Army. He admirably served his country as a medic during the Viet Nam Conflict. He was honorably discharged in December of 1970. Robert was a dedicated assemblyman as General Motors Corporation until his retirement in June of 2000. He fell in love with the former Joyce Farr, and in July 1971, they were joined in marriage. In 1973, they became loving parents of Leslie Gillard. Though quiet and unassuming, Robert thoroughly enjoyed family life. This included times with extended biological family members. as well as periods of joyful activity with his immediate family. Joyce and Robert travelled annually in March to Hilton Head where they engaged in St. Patrick's Day festivities. He also enthusiastically helped as "host extraordinaire" for two annual special family gatherings: the July 4th "Family Cookout" and the "Christmas Season Seafood Gala". His signature contributions were a "very special Tea" and a chili that had no equal! It also no secret that Robert's favorite snack was a combination of jelly beans and peanuts.. Robert shall be membered for his genuine love that he held for the City of Baltimore. He toured often and was especially impressed with changes effected by the impact of the Johns Hopkins enterprises of East Baltimore. On September 12, 2019, while as Northwest Hospital, Season's Hospice ward, Robert transitioned from this earthly realm. He shall be lovingly remembered by his dear wife, Joyce (Anne); his son, Scott C. Gillard; his daughter, Tanyelle Spicer and Leslie Gillard; sisters, Ruby McClendon (James), Joyce Gillard, Paula Gillard and Anita Gillard; brothers, James David Gillard and Alvin Gillard (Brenda); granddaughter, Kristin Gillard; two great-grandsons, Amari Brewington and Myles Dunaway; step-father-in-law, Deacon William Allen; and other loving relatives and caring friends.
