Joslyn Braxton

Joslyn Leatrice Ferrell Braxton, was born on December 26, 1926 in Chestertown, MD to the late Joshua T. Ferrell and Ardelle V. DeVere. She passed peacefully in her Ashburton home on Wednesday, November 13, 2019. She was the youngest of five children. Forrester C. Ferrell, Marjorie R. Hammond, and Inez F. White preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Elenora L. Spencer. The Ferrell family has roots in Queen Anne’s County dating back to 1874. Joslyn’s early education was received in Wilmington, DE and Baltimore, MD. She graduated as valedictorian in 1944 from Kennard High School in Centerville, MD. Following high school, Joslyn earned her undergraduate degree from Howard University. She went on to train and work as a registered nurse at Provident Hospital in Baltimore. Her studies continued at Bellevue Hospital in New York City where she specialized in psychiatric nursing. Joslyn returned to Baltimore in the early 1950’s to become the head school nurse at Morgan State University. From there, she spent the next thirty years of her life and beyond caring for patients, family, and friends. In 1954 she met and married her husband of over six decades, Dr. John S. Braxton, Jr. The two of them devoted their lives to practicing medicine and helping people in the city of Baltimore and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. From this happy union, the couple was blessed with three children, John S., III, Lanier D., and Barbara A. Braxton-Morgan. The Braxton Family were well-known for their impressive hospitality. Their beloved home on the Eastern Shore was known as Braxton Hall and host to many events both large and small. To anyone who knows Joslyn, knows how much this home meant to her. The importance of keeping this property in the family is something that Joslyn has instilled in each generation. Joslyn’s last and cherished days were spent celebrating her newest great child, Saylor A. Morgan. She was also great grandmother to Sargeant A. Morgan. She is preceded in death by her husband John and son Lanier. She leaves to carry on her legacy: Barbara A. Braxton-Morgan, John S. Braxton, III, only granddaughter Jessica A. Morgan and a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives.
