Hedy Rovena Johnson

Hedy Rovena Johnson was born in Clarkton, NC., on Sept 28, 1931. She departed this world on December 7, 2020, after a long illness. Her parents were the late Frazier B. Horne, Sr., and Laura Dell Horne. She was the firstborn sibling of 10. She attended Dunbar High School and, also the Spaulding Monroe School in Bladen County in North Carolina. She worked at St. Agnes Hospital as a nurse’s technician for over 30 years. She loved her job and made many long-term friendships with colleagues and doctors. The family were long time members of the Waters AME church in Maryland. She joined the Baptist church to be with her husband, the late Alvin T. Johnson, Sr in North Carolina. She converted to Islam, and later returned to Christianity, where she became an active member of the Eastside Baptist Church under the late Dr. C. C. Alexander. Later, she became a member of the Garden of Prayer under the leadership of the late Bishop Melvin B. Tuggle. When she was unable to attend church due to health reasons, she joined the Bible Study group at Johns Hopkins Elderplus under the leadership of Pastor Hatcher. She developed a close bond with him. In her earlier years, she was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking, especially with her sisters. All her children learned to cook watching her and getting lessons. She often fed any and everyone in the neighborhood. She also volunteered at school to work with children. Hedy enjoyed telling stories and bragging about her grands and great grands. Johns Hopkins Elderplus was her outlet that she enjoyed attending every day. She was fond of many of the staff members, especially the nurse, Maia Holden and the social worker, Avis Crayton. She made lots of friends and enjoyed singing on the chorus. She leaves to mourn her children and their spouses, Darlene, and Jordan (Joseph) Robertson, Benjamin and Mona Johnson, Yasmin Stokes, and Laurie Cooper. Her death is preceded by three other children, Denise Johnson, Alvin Johnson Jr., and Lillian “Diane” Mills. She also leaves to mourn her sister Evelyn Mitchell, and brothers, Lewis Horne, and Bernard Horne. Sister-in-laws, Beulah Horne, and Joyce Horne, son in-law, Dennis Mills, her four grandchildren that she help raise, Shakeela, Jameel, Malik, Jaliah, and the other grandchildren, Anissa, Karen, Michael, Patrisse, Kevin, David, Danielle, Alvin III, Jasmine, Barbara, Summer, Faith, Adia, Donald, and Kelley, bonus grandchildren, Kenyatta, Crystal, Joshua, PJ Cooper Jr., and MaKaylah, and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, whom she loved dearly.
