Chung, 77, passed away peacefully after a valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, with his dear wife, Joan, by his side. Tony was born on January 27, 1944, to the late Hyacinth Hew and Franklynval Chung in St. James, Jamaica; he was later raised by the late Auckland and Louise Chung in Kingston, Jamaica. Upon graduation from St. Georges College, Tony assisted with his family’s business, excelled as a sales representative for various companies in Jamaica, then emigrated to the United States during his early 20’s. On December 9, 1967, Tony married Joan Pottinger. Together they lived in Washington, DC, then relocated to Silver Spring, Maryland where they raised their children and resided until 2020. Despite hectic schedules, Tony maintained fun and engaging family traditions. Time was made for worship, family meals, drive-in movies, amusement parks, holiday celebrations and long road trips. He amply demonstrated his love, kindness and dedication to family and friends, and readily helped when needed. He and Joan regularly shared their resources and welcomed loved ones to visit and/or live with them, as they pioneered a new life in the USA. A loving father and diehard sports fan, Tony followed football, basketball, wrestling, boxing, soccer, baseball, ice hockey, field hockey and horse racing just to name a few. As a young man, he often played golf and tennis, then played softball with colleagues later in life. He encouraged his children do well in school and participate in sports. He attended all their games, volunteered to help their teams, coached soccer and hockey and earned many trophies for his teamwork and commitments. He loved to attend live sporting events, played dominoes, poker and participated in other pastimes with his family and friends. Undoubtedly, Tony will be watching and cheering on his favorite players and sports teams from heaven. Additionally, Tony enjoyed all things fish! An accomplished fisherman, he created lifelong memories with his wife and children, and scored awards and bragging rights for his “giant” catches while with friends. He always kept different types of fish as pets in huge aquariums strategically placed throughout his home. He claimed these aquariums provided serenity and a deep-er appreciation for life. Natural entertainers, Tony and Joan frequently hosted well attended parties at their home. He loved to play music, cook and make people laugh. Tony had an enduring passion for music and was even a member of St. George’s Choir. He kept everyone dancing at his house parties, playing hits from his extensive music collection which spanned many decades, cultures, and genres. Everyone looked forward to his cooking, a fusion of Jamaican, Chinese and American recipes. Some of his favorite dishes were jerk pork, ham choy and stew peas. Occasionally a man of few words, Tony was a generous spirit, known for his ebullient personality and mischievous sense of humor. He was a “professional prankster” who was as ingenious with the practical jokes (even if wildly inappropriate), as he was with his whimsical and delicious culinary creations. As the family assimilated into American life, Tony held various jobs. He was an insurance agent for New York Life Insurance Company, receiving recognition for his accomplishments, before opening Shandré Things Jamaican, which became a popular neighborhood grocery store during the 70’s. He was a reliable cab driver with many repeat passengers. He was a top distributor for the Washington Post, mentoring several colleagues and was again recognized for his work. Prior to his retirement, he sold automobiles at a local dealership for several years. Tony will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Chung; children, André [Kat], Shane, Antoinette [Kevin], Camille and Doug; grandchildren, Sierra, Kian, Greysen, Adrien “Gus”, Solana “Sunny”, Ebony, Chris, Tyasia and Omar. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses, Kingsley [Sandra], Claire, Beverly [Albert], Kenneth [Linda], Elise, Maureen, Hugh, Patrick, Elaine, Courtney; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many dear family and friends. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Tony’s life. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to The Oblate Sisters of Providence in memory of Anthony D. Chung.
